Popla Bellingen

I was commissioned by the critically-acclaimed Bloodwood Newtown to create the branding and identity for their new restaurant in Bellingen, Popla. Head chefs Claire van Vuuren and Mitch Grady wanted a look that both celebrated and complemented the restaurant’s focus on share plates and unusual ingredient combinations, so I came up with the concept of fruit and vegetable splices. Like the unusual ingredient combinations coming together to form exciting new dishes, when put together these splices become entirely unique compositions. As graphic devices, they are used on menus, promotional material, business cards, and animations, and to provide extra visual flair on the website.

The branding has a bold, modern black and white look, which is balanced by an abstract pattern I designed to complement the restaurant’s interior.

The website continues the look of the printed branding material, features in many website showcases.

The strong black and white logo was designed to replicate the elongated boughs of poplar trees, and can sit on its own on the staff uniform (above), or with the pear/cauliflower graphic device (below).

A black and white pattern (above) was designed for use across print and web assets to complement the restaurant interior designed by Killing Matt Woods, and the wallpaper designed by Georgia Hill.

The website (below) complements the bold black and white palette of the printed branding, and features the fruit and vegetable graphic devices.
