Client

DJ charlie villas

I was commissioned by DJ Charlie Villas to create video designs for her DJ sets, showcased on large screens at major Australian music festivals and events. The brief focused on celebrating her Filipino heritage, with a specific request to incorporate a cherished photograph of her grandmother into the visuals.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Filipino patterns and motifs, I designed a series of surreal, kaleidoscopic visuals. Filipino fans became a recurring motif throughout the pieces, paying homage to cultural identity and tradition. Another design features a stop-motion-style animation of Charlie dancing to add a playful and dynamic energy to the collection.

In addition to honoring her heritage, the visuals also incorporate nods to queer culture, reflecting Charlie’s identity and the vibrant queer community. Elements of ballroom aesthetics, neon-infused club visuals, and bold, unapologetic self-expression infuse the designs with a sense of joy, empowerment, and celebration. This project allowed me to merge cultural storytelling with vibrant, experimental aesthetics, creating visuals that not only connect with the essence of Charlie’s heritage but also embrace the spirit of queer creativity.

Fan Party

This design blends the elegance of Filipino fans with the movement and finesse of queer ballroom culture.

Lola

Surreal and hyper-saturated, this design features Charlie’s Lola (grandmother) as a regal central figure in her traditional terno gown.

Dancing lips

A textural, patterned, and abstracted design featuring stop motion lips and Filipino fans.

DJ in motion

An abstracted design featuring vintage film glitches and DJ Charlie Villas dancing.
